This paper craft is a Ogre Repelling Game for Setsubun (Bean-Throwing Festival or Bean-Throwing Ceremony), designed by Canon Papercraft. Setsubun is one of the traditional annual festivals held in Japan on February 3, the day before the first day of spring. On this day, people throw beans to expel evil spirits and attract good fortune, bringing a year of happiness.
People usually chant “Ogres out!” while throwing beans outside, and chant “Luck in!” while throwing bean inside the house, but there are many different practices such as throwing beans at a person wearing an ogre mask that symbolizes misfortune, illness, disasters, etc. People throw roasted soybeans, or peanuts in some parts of Japan. After the bean throwing, they eat one for each year of their life, or sometimes one extra as well, which is supposed to bring strength and health for themselves. This paper craft is a game associated with the "bean throwing" of Setsubun. Throw beans at a target of a red ogre, yellow ogre, and blue ogre to bring good luck.
