Shichi-Go-San is a Japanese festival which celebrates children's growth, and is celebrated on November 15. Boys aged 3 and 5, and girls aged 3 and 7 dress up in special kimonos and visit the shrine or temple. The sash tie is a part of the traditional kimono worn by the girls, and its patterened fabric tied in a butterfly shape beautifully decorates the back of the kimono. The children eat long, tube-shaped sweets known as "chitose ame," their red and white colors said to bring good luck and ensure the children grow up healthily. The kimono, sash and sweets package are decorated with symbols of good luck such as pine, bamboo, and plum blossoms, and cranes and tortoises.
