Though not particularly academically inclined, he is an excellent fighter who shares a somewhat unscrupulous past with Shi Seiran. He comes to greatly admire Kou Shuurei and becomes her assistant after she becomes an official of the Censorate.
Upon his introduction, Ensei is described as resembling a bear due to his messy hair and unkempt beard. His unruly appearance greatly annoys Shuurei and others, which eventually convinces him to shave it off, revealing himself to be a handsome young man in his late twenties rather than an older man. He notably has a scar below his left eye.
Ensei is a man who used his body more than his brain. Though he is very strong man, he is also extremely gentle and kind to the people around him. His character seems to contrast greatly with the rest of the cast of characters as his humorous and easy going personality seem nearly as a comic relief to the more serious characters of Saiunkoku. However, the light novels reveal his past as frightening and disparaging as his entire clan was massacred by the Satsujinzoku in a day.
He is well known for his martial ability using a large staff. Though, when he was once told to lay his staff down, Seiran commented that his true strengh lay in hand to hand combat. [Source: wikia]

Almost no one knows his original personal name and he is widely regarded as mysterious and eccentric, mostly because he constantly wears a wide array of unusual masks.
Kijin has a highly unusual appearance. He leaves his hair loosely flowing instead of binding it up according to custom, and is almost never seen without one of the masks from his wide collection. These masks usually conceal his entire face, although they have a lower panel that can open to uncover his mouth when he eats or drinks in public. Many of the masks were made by Reishin Kou, who is one of his few close friends and with whom he often enjoys meaningless arguments.
Although his masks are widely assumed to conceal a deformed or hideous appearance, in fact they serve the opposite function by concealing a face of such dazzling beauty that it can drive people insane.
