In concept and basic configuration, it was related to the early Korolyov RP-318 rocket powered aircraft which was developed in 1936 and first flew February 20th 1940, and the more recent Bereznyak-Isayev BI-1 Soviet design. After a vertical take-off, which eliminated the need for airfields, most of the flight to the Allied bombers was to be controlled by an autopilot. The primary role of the relatively untrained pilot was to aim the aircraft at its target bomber and fire its armament of rockets. The pilot and the fuselage containing the rocket-motor would then land using separate parachutes, while the nose section was disposable. The only manned vertical take-off flight on 1 March 1945 ended in the death of the test pilot, Lothar Sieber. For further information please click here.

The MiG-3 was a development of the MiG-1 by the OKO (opytno-konstruktorskij otdel — Experimental Design Department) of Zavod (Factory) No. 1 to remedy problems that had been found during the MiG-1"s development and operations. It replaced the MiG-1 on the production line at Factory No. 1 on 20 December 1940 and was built in large numbers during 1941 before Factory No. 1 was converted to build the Ilyushin Il-2.
On 22 June 1941 at the beginning of Operation Barbarossa, some 981 were in service with the VVS (the Soviet Air Force), the PVO (Soviet territorial air defense organization) and Naval Aviation. The MiG-3 was difficult to fly in peacetime and much more so in combat. It had been designed for high-altitude combat but combat over the Eastern Front was generally at lower altitudes where it was inferior to the German Messerschmitt Bf 109 as well as most modern Soviet fighters. It was also pressed into service as a fighter-bomber during the autumn of 1941 but it was equally unsuited for this. Over time the survivors were concentrated in the PVO, where its disadvantages mattered less, the last being withdrawn from service before the end of the war. As part of the Emergency Fighter Program, at the beginning of 1945 a programme was launched by the OKL for a new generation of fighter/interceptor aircraft in order to replace the He 162 Volksjäger. The new aircraft was intended to have superior performance in order to deal with high-altitude threats such as the B-29 Superfortress.
Messerschmitt designed a number of different high-altitude fighter projects which were submitted in February 1945. One of the designs, the Me P.1110 Ente (Duck), had a 40° wing sweep and annular air intakes in front of the wing root (akin to the North American YF-93), feeding a single Heinkel HeS 011A jet engine; the annular intakes, while flowing four percent less air, would suffer fifteen percent less drag than a single nose intake. The aircraft was to be armed with three MK 108 cannons in the nose, plus perhaps two more in the 40°-swept wings. There was a proposed butterfly tail variant, as well. Projected maximum speed was 1,015 km/h (631 mph; 548 kn).
The project would be soon dropped in favor of the more conventional other two, but in the end the Junkers EF 128 was chosen as the official winner of the competition and none of the Messerschmitt designs made it to the prototype stage. The designs brought forward by other German aircraft makers were the Heinkel P.1078, the Focke-Wulf Ta 183 and the Blohm & Voss P 212.
A development, the P.1111, with wing-root intakes to overcome the power losses (a concept later adopted by the Republic F-105 Thunderchief) and 45° sweep, was prepared in January 1945, but never built. For further information please click here.

The Eta-2 Actis-class interceptor was a Republic starfighter used late in the Clone Wars that shared design elements with the Republic"s Delta-7 and Delta-7B starfighters, as well as the TIE fighters of the later Galactic Empire. The Galactic Alliance would later come to utilize a successor, the Eta-5 interceptor.

The CF-100 was the only Canadian-designed fighter to enter mass production, serving primarily with the RCAF/CAF and in small numbers in Belgium.
