The submarine was laid down on September 29, 1986 at Krasnoye Sormovo Shipyard (Gorky) under the name of B-808; launched on July 30, 1988; commissioned on December 27, 1988. The sub obtained the name of Yaroslavl on December 27, 1999 when she was taken under patronage of Yaroslavl city administration.

With a submerged displacement of 48,000 tonnes, the Typhoons are the largest class of submarine ever built, large enough to accommodate decent living facilities for the crew when submerged for months on end. The source of the NATO reporting name remains unclear, although it is often claimed to be related to the use of the word "typhoon" ("тайфун") by Leonid Brezhnev in a 1974 speech while describing a new type of nuclear ballistic missile submarine, as a reaction to the US Navy Ohio-class submarines. The Foxtrot class was designed to replace the earlier Zulu class, which suffered from structural weaknesses and harmonic vibration problems that limited its operational depth and submerged speed. The first Foxtrot keel was laid down in 1957 and commissioned in 1958 and the last was completed in 1983. Orange Star, known as Red Star in Japanese iterations, is one of the five main forces of Wars World. It is featured in all installments of the series, with the exception of Advance Wars: Days of Ruin/Dark Conflict.
In all games it is the first country playable in Campaign mode. They are also a member of the Allied Nations. Also, they have the second highest number of COs, after Black Hole. The other three Allied Nations factions have 4 COs currently, but Orange Star has seven. With the exception of Jake, the forces of Orange Star is direct warfare, excelling in frontal assaults.

Green Earth is one of the five main forces of Wars World. It is featured in Super Famicom Wars, Advance Wars, Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising and Advance Wars: Dual Strike. They are also a member of the Allied Nations.
Green Earth"s forces are extremely organized. Eagle, the leader of Green Earth, specializes in aerial combat, while Jess dominates the ground, and Drake the seas.
In Advanced Wars 2, Black Hole forces, led by Black Hole"s second in command, Hawke, launched a campaign on the Green Earth homeland, conquering a great deal of the continent before the tides turn at the hand of Eagle, Jess, and Drake.
In Advanced Wars: Dual Strike, Javier joins the Green Earth army and contributes his abilities to the fight in Omega Land.
Green Earth appears to be inspired by Britain. The inclusion of Jess in Advance 2 and DS leads many to claim that Green Earth is based on Germany, however the original COs specialise in Air and naval forces; The RAF is known for repelling Nazi Germany during the battle of Britain and it Britain"s Navy was the backbone of the British empire for many years. It is even suggested that the arms race, between UK and Germany, prior to world war 1 was a result of Kaiser Wilhelm"s envy of Britains Navy.
