While the Federation considered theirConstitution-class starships to be heavy cruisers in their heyday, the Klingons referred to the same vessel, in their terms, as a battle cruiser. Ambassador-class starships were classified as heavy cruisers. In an alternate timeline, the Ambassador-class was simply referred to as a cruiser.

The class was meant to be a replacement for the aging Halcyon-class light cruisers. Their numbers are limited and they are usually commanded by the highest-ranking officers.
Nearly all Marathon-class cruisers were destroyed during the Battle of Earth, and were subsequently replaced by the Autumn-class heavy cruiser.

It was informally referred to as the Autumn, and its name abbreviated to "PoA."
Prior to the Fall of Reach, Pillar of Autumn was selected to support a SPARTAN-II operation to capture Covenant leaders. Captain Jacob Keyes was placed in command. The operation was forestalled by the Covenant assault on Reach and the cruiser was one of the few UNSC survivors and fled the system having lost most of its intended SPARTAN-II passengers.
The cruiser was guided to the Soell system by the AI Cortana. There it was engaged by a Covenant fleet guarding Installation 04. Keyes crash-landed the ship on the installation where the surviving crew continued the battle against the Covenant and later, the Flood. The ship"s sole remaining combat effective SPARTAN-II, John-117, was forced to detonate Pillar of Autumn"s fusion reactor, destroying the ship and the installation to prevent the installation from firing. The Tone was named after the Tone River, in the Kantō region of Japan and was completed on 20 November 1938 at Mitsubishi"s Nagasaki shipyards. Tone was designed for long-range scouting missions and had a large seaplane capacity. She was extensively employed during World War II usually providing scouting services to their aircraft carrier task forces. She almost always operated in this capacity in conjunction with her sister ship Chikuma.

The Salamis Kai-class cruiser is a refit of the original Salamis-class cruiser that incorporated design features from the Pegasus-class Albion and the failed Salamis 0083 refit. The refit design successfully increased the cruiser"s firepower and ability to field and support mobile suits.
The bow of this ship was widened to incorporate an internal mobile suit hanger that includes facilities and equipment to properly store, supply, and repair mobile suits. The system was far more efficient than the old method of strapping the mobile suit to the outside of the hull, though it restricted the number of mobile suits per cruiser to four machines. The hanger entrance was situated at the top of the hull, on the edge of a new flight deck from which mobile suits were launched and retrieved. The flight deck included a single launch catapult that allowed the mobile suit to quickly accelerate without the use of its thrusters, thus saving fuel. Because of the placement of the hanger and flight deck, one of the single-barrel beam cannons had to be removed.
The sub-bridges were replaced by two 2-barrel mega particle cannons as anti-ship weapons and four single-barrel machine gun turrets for increased anti-aircraft and anti-mobile suit combat, giving the refitted cruiser a total of six additional weapons emplacements. Although gun emplacements have been increased the external missile pods were completely removed, leaving only the eight internal missile launchers. [Source: wikia]
